Head of the National Narcotics Agency's (BNN) Yogyakarta chapter, Budi Harso, said the number of drug users in Yogyakarta had consistently risen over the last few years.

"Unless we take serious prevention measures, the numbers of narcotic and drug users in Yogyakarta will increase to well over 100,000 people, almost three and a half percent of the total population, by 2015," Budi told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

He said that surveys conducted by the BNN once every four years showed increasing use of drugs in the province.

"There are already a large number of people in Yogyakarta who have problems with drugs. Most of them are entrepreneurs, private employees, and university students," said Budi, adding that for the entrepreneurs and private employees, many of the habits began when they were at university. (ebf)
