Garuda will welcome passengers on board flights to London later this year.

Garuda Indonesia is taking aim at lucrative UK-bound Kangaroo Route passengers from Australia with a new wifi-enabled connecting flight from Jakarta to London's Gatwick airport, starting later this year.

The airline will fly its brand new Boeing 777-300ER jets nonstop to London with first, business and economy classes. Flights will run six times weekly starting in Q4 2013.

"This flight will be more convenient since it will be serving passengers - non-stop - from Jakarta to London with the brand new B777-300ER, which will be equipped with Wi-Fi and a chef on board for First Class passengers," promises Emirsyah Satar, Garuda's CEO.

Garuda hasn't revealed details of the new business class it's planning for these jets, but slides shown to Australian Business Traveller at the airline's headquarters just over a year ago lead us to expect it will be at least as comfortable as the fully flat business class seat the airline currently uses between Sydney and Jakarta.

The choice of Gatwick over Heathrow is firmly on-trend for new Kangaroo Route options bound for the UK, since Heathrow is over-subscribed.

London's smaller second airport can be more convenient than Heathrow for business travellers, especially anyone heading for the eastern side of London, with direct trains taking you to the City of London financial hub and faster connections on to Docklands.

Australian Business Traveller flew through Gatwick several times last year, and it's not the dingy holiday airport full of sticky children that it used to be.

With new lounges, premium fast-track security and an increasingly upmarket restaurant offering in departures (the Jamie Oliver Italian place is well worth a stop), it's a decent option for business travellers heading for London.
