Silence is golden in Bali

LOS ANGELES, California - Inspired by Bali's Hindu Day of Silence, "Nyepi," and supporting the global effort to improve the environment, Maya Ubud Resort & Spa, a member of Green Globe, observed World Silence Day earlier this year, on March 21. Balinese Hindus do not celebrate the coming of the new year of the Saka calendar with lavish parties, they celebrate with meditation instead. No activities are allowed to take place on that day. These mandatory religious prohibitions include no pleasure, no traffic, no fire, and no work.

It was a serene and quiet atmosphere at the resort on March 21, when the use of energy and lighting was minimized from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm that day. This year's theme was "Let's Silent for Earth." With that in mind, Maya Ubud Resort & Spa activated a range of energy-saving measures, reduced activities and cut down on using vehicles during the entire day. All unnecessary machinery was shut off, and the use of computers in all offices was kept to an absolute minimum. Non-essential Interior lighting in all corridors was dimmed or turned off, and lighting in public areas was minimal. Guests staying at the resort were invited to participate in the event, refraining from the use of air conditioning and lights in their rooms and villas. Staff at the property walked to work, rather than using their cars and motorcycles.

Even though Maya Ubud's event did only go on for four hours, the effects are long-lasting, and will help promoting a future, where human beings can live in harmony with nature. The property's mission is to do all possible to stop the deprivation of the planet's natural environment, and the team at Maya Ubud Resort & Spa is determined to continue supporting World Silent Day.

The "World Silence Day" was initially proposed as a global action to conserve the environment during the United Nations' Climate Change Conference in 2008. The selection of March 21 as World Silence Day is based on scientific grounds, when the sun is on the vernal equinox, just before heading north from the equator. The World Silence Campaign encourages every individual, regardless of race, religion, and social status to make a real contribution to save the earth by remaining silent for only four hours. As a result of absolutely no transportation that day, the island of Bali was estimated to have reduced about 20,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

Maya Ubud Resort & Spa in Bali demonstrates outstanding commitment to Green Policies and has implemented an impressive amount of proactive measures, protecting and sustaining the environment for generations to come.
