Indonesian President Joko Widodo's recent visit to Singapore marked the beginning of a potential tourism partnership between the two neighbouring nations.
Amongst several other agreements signed, President Jokowi and Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong agreed to increase cooperation on tourism in order to boost overall arrivals.
While foreign tourism arrivals to Singapore have historically surpassed that of Indonesia, Singapore's tourism performance has been on a slump recently, with year-to-date visitor arrivals in May 2015 falling 4.1% over the same period last year.
This is led by a significant decline in arrivals from some of Singapore's traditionally strong feeder markets including Indonesia (-13.6%), Malaysia (-4.6%) and Japan (-6.0%).
Both nations stand to benefit should the potential partnership materialize; packaging the destinations will lead to a wider variety of tourism offerings for visitors.
This development exemplifies the Indonesian government's recent proactive stance and commitment towards strengthening its tourism sector.
